Copper Helical Dangle Earrings with Turquoise, Whirlwind Earrings in a Western Style

These copper helical dangle earrings are all about the ornament - a kind of drop within a dangle sculptural piece I made to evoke dust devils in the high dry country around my home in South Park Colorado. I mixed copper, sterling silver, and turquoise elements, all iconic in southwest and western jewelry. These mixed metal handcrafted earrings with genuine Mexican turquoise would make a splendid gift for any woman who loves southwestern art and jewelry. 

I used solid copper strip wire, ⅛ inch wide and a few of my Western motif stamps to pattern and texture them. After stamping the metal is quite hard, so I torch-annealed it so that I’d be able to form these ribbon-like curls. I like how the stamped pattern coils away from you and back again. 

Since I wanted these earrings to  say “hey, we’re out west”, I chose some small (about 5mm) turquoise pebbles and stacked them up on sterling silver wire to dangle inside the copper whirlwind. Sterling silver ear wires in a simple high-peaked shape complete the set.

These fun, western earrings are 2 ¼ inches long. Each earring weighs 1.8 grams.
