Seashore Theme Charm Necklace, Aqua and Brown Stone Necklace with Cotton and Sterling Silver Neck Band

This piece is a seashore theme charm necklace full of texture and oceanside suggestive color and fun. I created this necklace while tapping into the spirit and memories of collecting charms on vacation or travels.

I selected three silver charms made of different materials. The lobster and conch shell are white metal alloy of unknown composition that I received in another artisan’s destash back in 2014. The details are of much finer quality than commonly found “zinc alloy” charms so my guess is that they pewter. The large scallop or clam shell is a vintage (~1970s) old stock sterling silver charm marked “sterling”. It still has a little metal tag that says “FLORIDA” hanging with it. This special charm was among my mother's jewelry when I inherited it, but the charm was still carded: it had never been added to her charm bracelet.

I strung the seashore-themed charms on tan cotton cord along with two handmade charms of ancient Roman glass that I wired in sterling silver. The charms are separated by amazonite natural stone beads in 8mm star cut rounds, and 6mm rounds and rondelles. The colors of amazonite are perfect for a seashore theme. They're a mixture of blue, blue green, sand, and tan. Cube-like faceted sterling silver beads add sparkle as does the sterling silver chain at the back.

I like the sea-side character that the tan colored cotton cord brings to the mix of aqua blue and sandy tones of the amazonite and glass charms.My knotting adds texture that evokes a fishnet, or even a tangle of seaweed along the tideline.

22 inches long, the center charm drops about 1”. Please inquire about alterations to suit your preferred necklace length. The front section with cotton cord, the large sterling silver links, stone beads, and charms cannot be altered. It accounts for 11 inches of the necklace length. I can shorten the chain before the closure.
