These azurite malachite earrings are handcrafted in sterling silver and feature charms that I made using silver scrap I reclaimed from my studio work. I enjoy making my own components for my jewelry designs, (almost) always making the ear hooks and wire work or torch balled head pins. This time I wanted to make something from the snippets and scrap pieces of sterling silver I've been capturing and saving for years. As silver costs rise, it's wise to hold onto even tiny bits of wire especially if I can give them a new and beautiful purpose.
To make the silver pebble charms, I first gathered a bunch of wire snippets and pieces of sheet metal scrap, added some pristine fine silver to the pile, and cleaned the material. I weighed out portions so that the charms would end up approximately the same size, then melted the piles with my torch. This results in a nice pebble of silver, kind of round, but organically so. Some hammering and torching and hammering again ensued to flatten the silver into the rounded disk shape. Another torch annealing and they were ready to polish and texture.
I textured my reclaimed sterling silver disks with a flower, a dandelion head, and a butterfly to depict a wild meadow and pollinator scene. I used my ball peen hammer to texture around the perimeter, drilled the charms for hanging, antiqued the imprint and polished the silver by hand and then tumbler for a natural shine. I chose 8mm round azurite malachite to go with the charms. I think this stone embodies "the blue planet", looking like the images of Earth seen from space. I hope these earrings speak to you about the fragile balance of our Earth and all Nature and in an artistic way, emphasize the importance of mindful practices at home (an in the artist's studio!).
