This handcrafted copper wire wrapped necklace, with a Peruvian blue opal slab pendant was inspired by Scottish folklore of Cailleach Bheurra.
Cailleach Bheurra in Scots Gaelic is “the Divine Hag”, goddess creator of the landscape, wilderness, storms, and weather. In Scottish folklore she rules the winter months and is said to have made the highest mountains and hills with rocks from a creel she carries (she’s a giantess with wild white hair, blue skin, and rust colored teeth). She herds deer, and can cause the ground to freeze with a touch of her staff.
This necklace is for her - made in the image of the heath plants and seaweeds, mosses and lichens she must tend to in a highlands winter.
The focal pendant is a Peruvian Blue Green opal slab with “raw” edges and semigloss surface. I created a Celtic spiral wrap for the stone and a copper ring of “twigs” to hang it from. The neck chain is a combination of stone and copper links, the copper links having a Celtic knot appearance but they are two layered links rather than actually knotted. I used serpentine, bronzite, and turquoise stones in the chain highlighting the browns, olive-leaning greens and spots of teal turquoise color in the opal stone.

Handcrafted entirely in copper using wire wrapping and metalworking techniques. The necklace is a little over 20 inches long. The pendant drops 2 ½ inches.
