Bats rule! They are helpful creatures who just happen to do their best work at night. And for this habit, have become a spooky symbol for Halloween.

For these flying bat dangle earrings, I cut a bat silhouette from sterling silver sheet. The bat received a geometric stamped design including a spiral over the heart: ancient-looking hieroglyphs that elevate the typical Halloween symbol to a revered, special creature of the night. The bat swings - like a trapeze - from two handmade gemstone chains with red and orange garnet, spinel faceted rounds, and a hematite faceted rondelle at the top. All metal is sterling silver, including my handmade ear hooks and has been oxidized to a nearly-black polished finish.

In ancient history, travelers wore garnet gemstones because they were believed to light up the night and provide protection from nightmares and accidents. While you don't need protection from these sweet bats, I thought garnet was a great accent for these symbols of the night.
