Forged Copper Spiral Pendant Necklace

A handmade beaded natural stone necklace with a rustic copper spiral pendant has both an ancient and a woodland vibe. 

I forged this spiral pendant from heavy gauge copper wire. Textured by hand and hammer, filed and polished then antiqued for glowing time worn character, the spiral slides on a beaded necklace of mostly 4mm stone beads. I used stones in a nature-inspired palette of grays, greens, and purples. The list of stones is long - but be on the lookout especially for the magic of larvikite - a black-gray stone with silvery shimmer. In addition to larvikite I used laguna lace agate, moss, agate, chevron amethyst, cat’s eye, cuprite, pyrite, and rhyolite. Together, the colors and textures of the natural stone beads evoke a Scottish (perhaps) hillside of moss, heath, and heather punctuated with rocks touched by the ancients.

Spirals are ancient spiritual symbols of rebirth, growth, and transformation. Spirals are present throughout Nature in growing plants, shells, whirlwinds and whirlpools, ripples in water, and the cycles of the season. Spirals are fundamental and raw. They are the galaxies we can barely glimpse. It's no surprise that the spiral is the most common and oldest motif in human spirituality expressed in ancient rock art, on the landscape and in adornment.

Strung on fine stranded, nylon coated steel beading wire and finished with sterling crimps, copper wire guards and crimp covers. This necklace is 23 inches long and the pendant drops 1 ⅜ inches from the beaded strand. It closes with my handcrafted copper hook and eye that measures 1 1/2 when clasped, an easy to handle size for working behind your neck.
