Brass Sun Earrings, Carnelian Statement Earrings

These handcrafted, hand-textured brass sun earrings feature carnelian star-cut faceted nuggets dancing inside the pretty brass coronas. Deep red orange in color, the triangular facets on the carnelian gemstones highlight the many points of the brass suns. The cheerful, summery ornaments hang on my handcrafted sterling silver ear wires with spiral detail.

1 ½ inches wide, the suns will hang like large hoops, sometimes sideways (parallel to your neck) and sometimes forward to show their sunny faces.

To make these earrings, I started with precut blanks I commissioned from a small shop, with the sun ray outline and a hole in the middle. I drilled, filed, sanded, and polished the brass to be smooth where they might touch you. I designed the texture to be like the active sun and its corona, swirling with energy and sometimes ejecting a burst into space. I used a couple different spiral stamps and turned them this way and that as I worked my way around the brass solar shapes. After texturing, I worked the discs into a slight domed shape, antiqued the brass to bring depth to the texture, then polished again for a nice shine.

For these earrings I chose 10mm (about3/8 inch) carnelian star cut rounds. The star cut faceting yields large, triangular facets that I thought would echo the triangular points of the brass suns. The orange stone nuggets are free to dance and sway within the interior circle of the sun. My handcrafted sterling silver ear wires continue the energetic spiral design with a hammer-textured spiral detail hovering above one of the Sun’s longest rays.

It is a gem that has been used since ancient times, as a stone of courage, and even to assist one’s passage to the afterlife. Today, carnelian is thought by some to enhance self-esteem and creativity, to combat feelings of inadequacy, to increase physical energy and overcome insomnia.
