These blue stone earrings feature a trio of blue gemstones and swirling textured silver charms.

For these earrings, I first created little silver charms. The design is sort of a spiral, the kind of symbol you might see in primitive art. But for these earrings I was interested in creating a lightweight charm with a texture that would sparkle while the charm danced at the bottom of the design.

I hung my handmade sterling silver charms beneath a stack of blue and blue-gray gemstones strung on oxidized sterling silver wire and separated by tiny bright sterling silver beads. Lapis and labradorite  (with lovely blue flash) 8mm faceted rondelles are at the top and middle of the stack, and K2 granite 8mm starcut rounds are at the bottom. Ear hooks are handmade by me in sterling silver in a simple, French hook style.

The wearing of charms may have begun as a form of amulet or talisman to ward off evil spirits or bad luck. During the pre-historic period, jewelry charms would have been made from shells, animal bones and clay. Later charms were made out of gems, rocks, and wood. I imagine that the first ancestor to encounter labradorite would definitely have figured out a way to make a charm from it so they could wear it as a special talisman. I love the wonderful mystery in labradorite: how the unassuming gray stones can reveal their inner fire and flash. The brilliant blue of these beads fit right into my blue stone color stack.

2 inches long, each earring weighs 2.6 grams.
